Happy to hear that there will be a new collector's book in 2009. Has there been any thought to making this a spiral so those of us that own the previous books could just add the chapters for the newest years? I mostly hate the thought of having to update all my old info to transfer it into the new book. Thanks, Diane

Hi Diane, Thank you for your suggestion. We have discussed several options for the 2009 Value Guide, including a supplement to the 2006 Guide. I don't believe there are any firm decisions yet, thus anything is a possibility.
I favor a total new guide that updates all values, as many have changed dramatically in the last few years. A new guide would also give us the opportunity to make corrections and improvements, especially to some of the photos.
As Editor, I do not have the final say. Final decisions will be made by Hallmark and the publisher. Cost and what type of book will lure the most buyers are high on the priority list. All parties involved are interested in producing an informative, useful, quality book that Collectors will enjoy owning.

Hallmark is involved in these? The 2005 and 2006 Value Guides by Bang Zoom Publishing are the only Hallmark Value Guides that have ever been published that were licensed and approved by Hallmark Cards. All contents are approved by Hallmark and the book meets their requests/requirements. They have not had any interest or input in what values are placed on the ornaments. Their interests are more along the lines of making sure all the copyrights, trademarks and legal areas are properly covered. Also, the overall quality, size, retail price point, and frequency of publication. Hallmark has supported the book by purchasing large quantities, which are then sold through the Hallmark Store So, yes...they have been involved IN A VERY POSITIVE & SUPPORTIVE WAY in the past and hopefully will be in the future.

Nicki, I didn't mean anything negative when I asked. It just surprised me because I remember a Hallmark person saying that wasn't their baby and knew nothing about it at one of the events. Hallmark reflecting on the 2ndary market prices wouldn't bother me either way because I bought the book for a complete reference in place of the big books they should be doing. They don't seem much interested in the 2ndary market to care about those prices anywya.

I thought H* kept their hands pretty much off anything related to the sec market, and should always be the rule when it comes to values. Interesting information. Also, I so agree with you: Hallmark should be making the big books -- and do them exactly like the 1993 (5th) edition. The good large photos, the text of description, size, ornament medium, stock number, and retail price -- a collector's dream. A book like that is a classic, like an encyclopaedia. The supplement they published in 1998??? was physically the same height and width, and it was a hardback, but after that there is not much to recommend it. Of course I bought it back then but haven't opened it since the day I bought it. OTOH, my 1993 5th looks like it is about fifty years old rather than fifteen. Even after all this time, I still enjoy sitting down and thumbing through it.

A few years I spoke with Clara regarding my hope that "Hallmark would update the large hard cover books" Clara quickly corrected me saying that , the book is not Hallmark's, that is is HER book and that she at that time had no plans to update it. Not sure I still understand how or IF Hallmark was involved, just always assumed they were until the conversation with Clara.

Barb, I agree with you on that 1973-1993 book (I have the 6th edition) and I liked the 1998 update too. But having worked for and being collectibles manager at a Hallmark store for 15 years during the time these books were done, I know that they were very expensive for Hallmark to produce, and thus retail price on them was beyond what most collectors were willing to pay. We sold most of our books at 50% off after Christmas, as did most of the stores around here. Sometimes, even lower.
Sadly, I think the cost, as well as Clara's availability, is what's preventing Hallmark from ever publishing another one like it.
