Why does Hallmark not use the actual sound clips from the movie? Instead they have other people re-record the lines and they do a really awful job of it.

Rumor is that Carlton has the rights to the real sound clips and so Hallmark can't use those.
I wish the ornaments were completely without sound if they can't have the authentic clips. Or I wish they would be creative and do something other than voice clips - perhaps get permission for music used in the movie? Or sound effects instead of voices? But I agree, the fake recordings just are not right.

Diana, You're answer certainly makes sense, I hadn't heard that, but do know that Carlton has done a number of Christmas Story ornaments.
I agree that the quality of the sound clip is pitiful, wish Hallmark had gone a different direction with it. And am surprised that the licensing of the ornament allowed such a clip.
One side note, we have rec'd questions about the differences in the 2006 Leg Lamp ornament vs the 2008 Leg Lamp ornament...and have compared them side by side. And, the differences are just in the sound clips. The 06 ornament has just one saying, while the 08 Leg Lamp has three different clips. No differences in the ornament design and only a slight change in the ornament box.

Wow, that's interesting news. Thanks for making the comparison, Nicki.
